Restaurant Review: Brown Sugar Kitchen

The Brown Sugar Kitchenette, which is billed as serving ‘new character down home’ food, is self-denial becoming a neighborhood attraction and fix. Located in West Oakland on Mandela Parkway, the restaurant continues the condition of an area stretching from the West Oakland BART passenger station to Emeryville.

“I expected to have a lower opening,” says chef/proprietor, Tanya Holland at the end of a long kaftan on a continually busy Saturday. On this day, patrons waited upwards of 45 minutes for a propose in the 43-seat restaurant.

The waiting constantly is made more palatable by the wit to order juice, mimosas (on weekends), Low-spirited Bottle coffee or fresh baked pastries from the ‘bar’ while you minister to. Fresh baked sweets catalogue sticky buns, muffins, as spurt as cakes, cookies, and pies.

Not at most does Holland oversee the ordinary operation, she is in the kitchen cooking each day. On weekends, Holland is helped out by co-holder and spouse, Phil Surkis.

Surkis also oversees the restaurant music playlist, which is cause of Holland’s concept of ’mortal’, and contributes to the comfortable ambience.
